A look at Psalm 56
Psalm 56 (N.LT)
1 O God, have mercy on me,
for people are hounding me.
My foes attack me all day long.
2 I am constantly hounded by those who slander me,
and many are boldly attacking me.
3 But when I am afraid,
I will put my trust in you.
4 I praise God for what he has promised.
I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?
5 They are always twisting what I say;
they spend their days plotting to harm me.
6 They come together to spy on me—
watching my every step, eager to kill me.
7 Don’t let them get away with their wickedness;
in your anger, O God, bring them down.
8 You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.
9 My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
This I know: God is on my side!
10 I praise God for what he has promised;
Yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.
11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?
12 I will fulfill my vows to you, O God,
and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
13 For you have rescued me from death;
you have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in your presence, O God,
in your life-giving light.
Psalms 56 is a perfect example of the persecution we ourselves face as Christians today.
David mentions in verse 1 how all day long his enemies were in hot pursuit of him. In this same way our enemies pursue us. Everyday we are under constant attack, whether spiritual or physical.
But we put our trust in God and do not fear. What are these attacks against the Holy One who is God? When we are strongly holding on to Him in spirit these attacks seem like nothing to us.
Verses 5-6
We are ridiculed when we preach Christ for this is a language many don’t understand. Many times our words are purposely twisted, for the enemy in his famous reputation is a mocker. A perfect example of this is that for some strange reason its only the Christians who are misconstruing the word of God and setting a terrible example of what it is that Jesus preached who usually receive the most propaganda. From what I have seen these are always the ones in the spot light.
Our enemies lurk and watch us, constantly waiting for us to fall or slip to point a finger. All this to the point that even if you do what is right you are persecuted for “thinking” yourself holy or not going to the rhythm of the world. And even more so if you do what is wrong. If you slip or mess up you are quickly categorized as a hypocrite and a fake.
If you preach of Gods mercy, people point a finger and say “well what about all the deaths that happen around the world?”.
And if you preach God’s justice you will hear “then why do so many get away with crime?”
To this I ask, why do people only remember God when they feel sorry for something they have done and seek mercy, or when something is done to them and they seek justice?
Someone once asked me, “if I give life to a creation, why would I want to destroy them?”
To this I answered ” if you give life to a creation, would you like it if they ignored you and slandered you and refused to have anything to do with you?”
Still to this day I don’t enjoy the persecution. I don’t know if in the near future I will come to like it at some point. But it is evident in verses 8 and 9 that David didn’t necessarily get a kick out of it either. He speaks about his misery and all his tears as well as having to cry out to God for help.
One thing I will testify about is that God has given me a lot of patience and strength to endure. This is just another cross to carry and another testimony to offer. So an Amen!!! for the trials and persecutions and glory be to God for he is still good. I know the God that I serve will see me through this one also. This is still nothing.
